Troubleshooting: Multiroom+ System IR
Troubleshooting Approach
When attempting to troubleshoot any issue, we need to isolate where the root cause of the fault could lie by a logical process of elimination.
At the start of a troubleshooting process, never rule out anything as not a potential cause of the problem. Every aspect of the installation should be considered as a potential suspect. Each component of the installation should be ruled out one-by-one and only then eliminated from the troubleshooting process as the potential problem.
IR Troubleshooting Stages
NB: Before endeavouring on the troubleshooting process, please check the batteries in your remote control(s) are fully charged.
If you are using a secondary IR system, such as an existing legacy RF ‘magic eye’ style coax-based system – please totally disconnect, so as not to influence or confuse the results of HDanywhere IR troubleshooting and testing.
Please note that HDanywhere uses a propriety wide-band IR system, meaning that 3rd party ‘other-brand’ IR cables and accessories cannot be used.
1. Double-check IR system elements at TV locations
In order for your source device remote(s) or universal IR remote control choice to work effectively at TV locations:
A) Ensure that the IR RX cable receiver eye is fully inserted into the 3.5mm jack port on the Receiver labelled ‘IR RX’, (NOT ‘IR TX’).
B) Ensure that the IR RX cable magic eye is positioned in sight of where you would usually like to point the remote control(s) and has not fallen or been moved to a position where it is no longer in-line of sight. TIP: Usually positioned centrally at either the top or bottom of the display is best.
C) Check these elements at all TV locations.
2. Double-check IR system elements at the source devices
A) Ensure that the IR TX emitter cables are connected correctly to the 3.5mm jack ports labeled IR TX 1, 2, 3, 4 on the central hub front panel. (i.e. The IR TX plugged into port 1 is positioned in front of the HDMI source connected to HDMI input 1)
B) MOST CRITICAL POINT: Position the IR TX emitter bud exactly over the source device’s IR receiving window, using the supplied clear sticky pads on each of the corresponding connected source devices 1, 2, 3 and 4.
C) Cover over the IR TX buds with the included sticky hoods. This will eliminate the possibility of IR signal leaks affecting other source devices in the vicinity.
3. Isolating the problem element
NB: Have a pen and paper handy to record the results of the following tests.
A) Go to TV location 1 and select source device 1 either with the system remote control or manually via the central hub’s physical buttons.
B) Attempt to use source device 1′s IR remote control. Does it work? Yes (Y) or No (N).
If (Y) move on to point C.
If (N) move on to the next section point 4Ai and if reattempted point 4Aii, 4Aiii and so on.
C) Select source device 2 either with the system remote control or manually via the central hub’s physical buttons. Attempt to use source device 2′s IR remote control. Does it work? Yes (Y) or No (N). If (Y) move on to point D. If (N) move on to section 4.
D) Select source device 3 either with the system remote control or manually via the central hub’s physical buttons. Attempt to use source device 3′s IR remote control. Does it work? Yes (Y) or No (N). If (Y) move on to point E. If (N) move on to section 4.
E) Select source device 4 either with the system remote control or manually via the central hub’s physical buttons. Attempt to use source device 4′s IR remote control. Does it work? Yes (Y) or No (N). If (Y) move on to point E. If (N) move on to section 4.
D) Repeat this process at each TV location until everything is working as expected.
4. Further isolation of locating the problem element
If you have reached this section, you have isolated the problem to a particular TV location and source device combination.
A) The fault could lie with that TV location IR RX cable or the IR TX cable connected to IR TX port 1 in this instance.
i) Replace the IR RX cable connected to the Receiver with either a spare or one from another Receiver location on the system and re-attempt point 3B. If replacing the cable solved the issue, contact customer services stating your order number and quoting ‘M+RX4i replacement cable required’.
ii) Make absolutely certain that the IR TX emitter cable connected to the source is in the correct position to emit IR effectively and be received by that source device, then re-attempt point 3B.
iii) Replace the IR TX emitter cable connected to the source with either a spare or one from another source on the system and re-attempt point 3B. If replacing the cable solved the issue, contact customer services stating your order number and quoting ‘M+TX4iiii replacement cable required’.
iiii) Potential hardware fault with the IR circuit board. Contact customer services stating your order number and that you have reached point 4Aiiii in the multiroom+ troubleshooting process.
